bcTester is a very good barcode reader. It opens image files such as BMP, JPG, TIF and PNG and also PDF files. It recognizes a wide area of barcode types (e.g. DataMatrix, Aztec, QR, linear, and many more).
After you open an image or PDF file, you can select the area with the code using your mouse or the program can automatically detect it. To simplify the process (for the scanning algorithms), the utility allows you to convert the image to monochrome or invert the colors. Usually, you have to specify the type of the barcode manually. Fortunately, even if you don’t know the name of the barcode type, this piece of software can perform an analysis of the image and detect the format on its own. The only drawback is that it requires more time for processing.
The utility does not have many features but it has the ones that are important. An example is the ability to search for barcodes that are skewed in the image.
The program is very easy to use and the only thing complex about it is the collection of technical names for different types of codes.
Overall, this is an excellent barcode scanner and the fact that it’s also free makes it even better.
